Question

A plot of log (x/m) and log ‘p’ is a straight line at an angle of 45° and the intercept on the y-axis is equal to 0.3010. Calculate the amount of gas adsorbed in gram per gram of adsorbent when pressure is 0.2 atm.

Solution

According to Freundlich adsorption isotherm,
xm=kP1n
Where,
x is the mass of gas adsorbed on a mass m, of the adsorbent at a pressure P.
Now taking log,
logxm=logk+1nlogP
Given, 1n=tan45° or n=1 and logk=0.3010,P=0.2 atm

logxm=0.3010+1×log0.2

logxm=log2+log0.2

logxm=log0.4

xm=0.4 g
