Question

A point charge of 2.0 μC is at the centre of a cubic Gaussiansurface 9.0 cm on edge. What is the net electric flux through thesurface?

Open in App
Solution

Given: The magnitude of the point charge is 2.0μC and the edge length of a Gaussian surface is 9.0cm.

Using Gauss’s theorem, the net electric flux through all six faces of cube is given as,

ϕ T = q ε 0

Where, the charge placed at the center of the cube is q and the net electric flux through all six faces of the cube is ϕ T .

The permittivity of free space is given as,

ε 0 =8.854× 10 12 C 2 / Nm 2

By substituting the given values in above equation, we get

ϕ= 2× 10 6 8.854× 10 12 =2.26× 10 5 Nm 2 /C

Thus, the magnitude of the net electric flux through the square is 2.26× 10 5 Nm 2 /C .
