Question

A point charge q1 exerts an electric force on a second point charge q2. If a third charge q3 is brought near to q2, the electrostatic force exerted by q1 on q2 will
(Presence of charges in the vicinity does not change the force between any two charges)

Solution

According to superposition principle, net force on q2 is,
Fnet=F21+F23
F21 is force on q2 due to q1
F23 is force on q2 due to q3

As there is no change in relative positions of q1 & q2, the electrostatic force on q2 due to q1 will not change.
|F21|=kq1q2r2

Why this question ? Caution: Always remember force exerted by one charge on another one is independent of the presence of a nearby charge. Although Fnet will take into account the vector sum of all interacting forces.
