Solution

Finding the exact dimensions of the poster which will give the largest area:

Given, area is 210

Margin at bottom and side is 1inch

Margin at top is 2inch

Let the length be xinch and width be yinch

Expressing y in terms of x

Area=length×width210=xyy=210x

The printed area will be the area excluding the margins.

Calculating the printed area:

The printed area can be written as,

A=length×width=x-3y-2=x-3210x-2=210-2x+6-630x

Now, in order to find the maximum printed area, we will have to calculate the critical point.

Finding the critical point:

Differentiating the area with respect to x to find the critical point.

dAdx=-2+630x20=-2+630x2dAdx=0formaximizingA630x2=2x2=315x=315=335y=210x=210335=70×7035=235

Hence, the dimensions are 335inch,235inch.
