The correct option is A 4 Ω
The potential difference across AB is
VAB=10 volt

Potential gradient of wire AB,

dVdl=10100=110V/cm

VAC=LAC×dVdl

VAC=40 cm×110 V/cm=4 V

Redrawing the circuit at balanced state,

i=51+R

Also equating the potential difference,

VDE=VAC

VD5+1(51+R)=VE

VDVE=551+R

VAVC=551+R

4=551+R1=51+R

1+R=5

R=4 Ω

Hence, option (a) is the correct answer.
