Question

A problem in statistics is given to five students A, B, C, and D. Their chances of solving it are 13, 14, 15 and 16 respectively. What is the probability that the problem will be solved?

Solution

Probability of A solving =13

P (A not solving)=1-13 =23

Similarly,

P (B not solving) =1-14 =34

P (C not solving) =1-15=45

P (D not solving)=1-16=56

Probability of statistics not being solved =23×34×45×56

=13

the probability of statistics solved =1-Probability of statistics not being solved

Therefore, the probability of statistics solved =1-13

=23

Hence the required probability is 23.
