Question

A proton and an electron have same kinetic energy. Which one has greater de-Broglie wavelength and why?

Open in App
Solution

Let m1,m2 be the masses and v1,v2 be the velocities for electron and proton respectively .
As the two particles have same kinetic energy , therefore
1/2m1v21=1/2m2v22=E
or m1v1=2m1E and m2v2=2m2E
since m1<m2 or m1v1<m2v2 .
As de-Broglie wavelength , λ=h/mv , it means that de-Broglie wavelength for electron is greater .
