Question

A proton is moved 15 cm on path parallel to the field lines of a uniform electric field of 2.0×105 V/m
What are the possible change in potential ?consider both cases of a moving the proton .

Solution

We know, change in potential when a charge is moved in an Electric Field,
Δ=E.Δx ( Δx: displacement )
(i) when proton is displaced along E field, Δx=15 cm
Δv1=2.0×105×(0.15)
Δv1=30 kv
(ii) when proton is displaced against E field, Δx=15 cm.
The potential difference is just negative of case (i)
Δv2=Δv1=30 kv.
