Question

A proton moves along a horizontal line towards the observer. What will be the direction of concentric circular field lines of the magnetic field produced due to its motion?

Solution

The direction of the magnetic field lines

  1. The direction of concentric circular field lines of the magnetic field will be in an anti-clockwise direction accordingly to the direction along the path of the observer.
  2. The direction of the concentric circular field lines of the magnetic field can be found out by using the right-hand thumb rule where the thumb denotes the direction of electric current and the curl fingers show the direction of the magnetic field line in the perpendicular plane.
  3. Here the direction of the proton will be the direction of the electric current and the curled fingers of the right hand will be the direction of the magnetic field lines, so from that, the direction of the magnetic field lines are in an anticlockwise direction according to the observer.

Hence, the magnetic field lines will be in an anticlockwise direction according to the observer.
