In case of terrestrial ecosystem such as forest ecosystem, the larger net biomass of producers outweighs the smaller weight of consumers making the pyramid of biomass upright.

But the same pyramid is inverted in an aquatic ecosystem. This is because in oceans, a food chain typically starts with phytoplanktons and ends at predatory fish. Phytoplanktons although at the lowest trophic level have the least biomass and the value increases gradually towards the apex which consist of the predator fishes like the sharks and whales having maximum biomass.
