Question

A radioactive nucleus is being produced at a constant rate 100 per sec. Its decay constant is 50 per sec. If N0 are the number of nuclei at time t=0, then maximum number of nuclei possible are _____.

Solution

The accumulation rate of the nucleus is given by,

dNdt=(Rate of production) - (Rate of disintegration)

Let α be the rate of production and λ be the decay constant.

Rate of disintegration =λN

So, at any given time t, the governing equation will be,

dNdt=αλN

When N reaches a maxima,

dNdt=0

N=αλ

Here, α=100 s1 ; λ=50 s1

N=10050=2

Hence, the correct answer will be 2.
