Solution

Radioactivity: A spontaneous phenomenon of the transformation of an unstable nucleus into a stable nucleus by the emission of radiation (Becquerel rays) is called radioactivity.

  1. There are three types of radiations named alpha (α), beta (β), and gamma (γ).
  2. Alpha (α) radiation consists of two protons and two neutrons and is identical to the helium-4 nucleus.
  3. Alpha (α) particles have two positive unit charges and a four-unit mass.
  4. Beta (β) radiation consists of negatively charged particles known as electrons.
  5. Beta (β) particles have a mass equal to an electron.
  6. Gamma (γ) radiation is highly energetic electromagnetic radiation with no charge and mass.
  7. Therefore alpha (α) and beta (β)are the only charged radiations.
