Question

A railway track (made of iron) is laid in winter when the average temperature is 18C. The track consists of sections of 12.0m placed one after the other. How much gap should be left between two such section so that there is no compression during summer when the maximum temperature goes to 48C? Coefficient of linear expansion of iron =11×106C1.

Solution

L0=12cm

α=11×105/C

tw=18C

ts=48C

Lw=L0(1+αtw)=12(1+11×105×18)=12.002m

Ls=L0(1+αts)=12(1+11×105×48)=12.006m

ΔL=12.00612.002=0.004m0.4cm
