A ray is incident on a glass slab of refractive index $\sqrt 3$ from air at an angle of $30^{o}$ from the surface. What is the angle of refraction?

Solution

Since incident ray makes 30^0 with the surface of slab , therefor angle of incidence, $i = 60^{0}$
$μ_{1} = 1$ , $μ_{2} = \sqrt{3}$
now using Snell's law,
$μ_{1} sin i = μ_{2} sin r$
this gives , $sin r = \frac{sin 60^{0}}{\sqrt{3}}$
$r = {sin}^{- 1} \frac{1}{2} = 30^{0}$
