Given: A ray of light falls on a transparent sphere with centre C as shown in the figure. The ray emerges from sphere parallel to line AB.

To find the refractive index of sphere

Solution:

The ray diagram is as shown in above fig.

XAY=PAC=60 [vertically opposite angles]

In ΔACD,

Side AC=side CD

Hence DAC=CDA=r

Hence, DCB=2r [external angle property]

As AB is parallel to PD,

δ=60

i.e., δ=2rr=30

Now applying snell's law,

μ=sinisinrμ=sin(60o)sin(30o)=3212μ=3

Hence the refractive index of the sphere is 3
