Question

A ray of light is incident on a prism made of a material of refractive index 2 at an angle (i). Angle of the prism is 30 and if the second refracting surface is silvered, a ray of light entering the prism will retrace its path (after reflection from the silvered surface) then find the angle of incidence.

Solution

The correct option is B 45
Given,
Refractive index of material of the prism, μprism=2

Angle of prism, A=30

Applying snell's law at first face, we get

μair sini=μprism sinr

Substituting the given data,

1sini=2sinr......(1)

From the ΔABC,

A+B+C=180

30+B+90=180

B=60

From figure we can write,

r=9060=30

Now, substituting the value of r in equation (1), we have

1sini=2sin30

sini=2(12)

i=45

So, angle of incidence will be 45.

Thus, option (b) is the correct answer.
Why is Question :
This question tests the conceptual understanding of refraction and reflection when one of the face of the prism is made reflecting surface instead of refracting surface.
