Question

A ray of light strikes a plane mirror at an angle of incidence 45o as shown in fig. 1.364. After reflection, the ray passes through a prism of refractive index 1.5 whose apex angle is 4o. If the mirror be rotated by X degrees then the total deviation of the ray becomes 90o. Find X?

Solution

The deviation produced by small angled prism,
δ1=(μ1)α=(1.51)4o=2o (always)
Deviation caused by mirror,
δ2=180o2i=180o2×45o=90o
Net deviation produced by system =δ1+δ2=2o+90o=92o
This is more than 90o.
Greater is angle of incidence on the mirror, smaller is the deviation.
If β is the angle of rotation of mirror in clockwise direction to increase angle of incidence, then deviation produced by the mirror will be 180o2(45o+β)=90o2β
Therefore, total deviation produced =90o2β+2o=92o2β
Given, 92o2β=90oβ=1o
