Question

A ray of light strikes the surface of a rectangular glass block such that the angle of incidence is 42°. Sketch a diagram to show the approximate path taken by the ray in each case as it passes through the glass block and emerges from it.

Solution

  1. The bending of light passing from one medium to another medium is called refraction.
  2. You know that when the ray of light passes from a rare medium to a denser medium, it bends towards the normal.
  3. When the angle of incidence is 42°, then a ray of the light passing from air to the block will bend towards normal.
  4. Then the angle of refraction will be less than 42°.
