Question

A ray of light traveling in a vacuum enters into a medium of the refractive index μ it is found that the angle of refraction is half of the angle of incidence then the value of angle of incidence is

Open in App
Solution

Step 1: Given

Angle of incidence=i

Angle of refraction=r

The angle of refraction (r)=12 The angle of incidence (i)

Step 2: Formula used

μ=sinisinr

sin2θ=2sinθcosθ

Step 3: Solution

From snell's law,

μ=sinisinr

Now, by simplifying the above equation

μ=2sini2cosi2sini2 sin2θ=2sinθcosθ,r=i2

μ=2cosi2

i=2cos-1μ2

Hence, the angle of incidence is 2cos-1μ2.
