A ray of monochromatic light follows the path shown in the figure as it passes through five layers of different optical media of refractive indices μ0,μ1,μ2,μ3 and μ4. If the angle of incidence in the first medium is 30,
(i) compare the refractive indices of the media.
(ii) determine the angle of deviation on the whole.

(1) At each interference ,the ray deviate away from the normal.
Therefore μ0<μ1<μ2<μ3<μ4
(2) At the interference of medium 3 and 4,total internal reflection takes place.
Angle of deviation in the case of reflection=1802i=18060=120
