Question

A ray R1 is incident on the plane surface of the glass slab (kept in air) of refractive index 2 at an angle of incidence equal to the critical angle for this air glass system. The refracted ray R2 undergoes partial reflection and refraction at the other surface. The angle between reflected ray R3 and the refracted ray R4 at that surface is:

Solution

The correct option is C 105o
To find: Angle between R3 & R4=?
Angle of incident = critical angle
Solution: Critical angle θc=sin(1μ)=sin(12)
i=θc=45o
Applying snell's law at 1st surface
μ1sini=μ2sinr
1×sin45=2sinr
r=30
Applying snell's law at 2nd surface
μ2sinr=μ1sine
2×sin30=1×sine
sine=12
e=45o.
Angle between R3 & R4=180re
=1803045=105.
