Solution

Red-ox reaction: The reaction in which both oxidation and reduction take place simultaneously is known as the red-ox reaction.

  • The substance which participates in a reduction reaction or gains electrons from others is known as an oxidising agent.
  • Example: Carbon(C) react reacts with Oxygen(O2) to give Carbon dioxide(CO2)

C(s)+O2(g)CO2(g)CarbonOxygenCarbondioxide

In the above reaction,

  • Carbon participates in the oxidation reaction, therefore it is considered a reducing agent (R.A).
  • Oxygen participates in the reduction reaction, therefore it is considered an oxidising agent (O.A)

Therefore a Red-ox reaction is a reaction in which both oxidation and reduction take place.
