Copper sulphate crystals contain water of crystallisation. When we heat the crystals, this water is removed and the salt turns white. Five water molecules are associated with one formula unit of copper sulphate. So, x=5. When the water of crystallisation is removed, one molecule of copper sulphate is left behind. So, y=1.
