Moon and Earth share similar somewhat similar structure in terms of core, mantle and crust. But, the chemical composition of the crust of the Moon is little bit different than the composition of the Earth's oceanic and continental crust. Owing to the similarities between the two bodies, scientist came up with the giant impact hypothesis, where it is widely believed that Moon initially was a part of the Earth and was formed when Earth and an object of almost same size collided with each other, resulting in fragments thrown out in space, out of which one large fragment happen to form our Moon.
