Question

A recently discovered isotope of the noble element oganesson (symbol ‘Og’) has electronic configuration 2, 8, 18, 32, 32, 18, 8 and mass number 294.Calculate the number of electrons, protons and neutrons in its atom.

Solution

  • From the given electronic configuration we can get the number of electrons.
  • Sum: (2+8+18+32+32+18+8)=118; hence the number of electrons = 118.
  • In a neutral atom, the number of protons and number of electrons are equal since the atom is electrically neutral.
  • Thus number of protons = 118
  • Given mass number = 294
  • Mass number = sum of a number of protons and neutrons.
  • Number of neutrons = mass number - number of protons = (294-118) = 176.
