A rectangular coil ABCD having a battery connected between its ends A and D is placed in between the pole pieces of a horseshoe magnet as shown. What is the direction of forces on the coil?
AB- outward, CD- inward, BC- no force and DA- no force.
As we can see the direction of the magnetic field is from north to south and the current follows the path DCBA. By Fleming's left-hand rule, on the arm AB, the force is outwards normal to the plane of the coil. On the arm BC, no force acts as it is parallel to the magnetic field lines. On the arm CD, the force is inwards perpendicular to the plane of the coil. On the arm DA, no force acts as it is parallel to the magnetic field lines.
