A rectangular loop of sides 10 cm and 5 cm carrying a current I of 2 A is placed in different orientations as shown in figure below. Assume the magnetic field to be uniform.

In which orientation the loop is in equilibrium position?

The correct option is B (ii) & (iv)
Since in all four cases the loop is placed in uniform B and it is a closed loop.

Fnet=0

Force due to magnetic field is zero

However for torque on loop is given by,

τ=M×B

For equilibrium position of loop
Fnet=0 & τ=0

τ=MB sinθ

Thus τ=0 is possible, when θ=0 or θ=180, where θ is the angle between magnetic moment vector & magnetic field.



Thus, the orientation shown in the figure (ii) & (iv) represent equilibrium position.

Hence, option (B) is the correct answer.
