Let PQRS be the rectangular park. Let ABCD be the external boundary of the path which will also be rectangular in shape.

Width of the path = 2 m
Length of the park = PQ= 12 m
Breadth of the park = PS=8 m
$\therefore$ Area of the park PQRS = 12 $\times$ 8= 96 m ${}^2$
Length of the external boundary of the path = AB =12 + 2 + 2 = 16 m
Breadth of the external boundary of the path = AD =8 + 2 + 2 = 12 m
Hence Area of ABCD = 16 $\times$ 12=192 m${}^2$

Area of the path = Area of ABCD - Area of park PQRS
= 192 - 96 = 96 $m^2$
