A rectangular reservoir is 100 m long and 50 m wide. Find the speed of the water flowing into it through a square pipe of side 10 cm such that the water rises by 1 m in 10 hours.
50 km/hr
Length of the reservoir, l=100 m
Breadth, b=50 m
Level of water in the reservoir after 10 hours =1 m
⇒ Volume of water flown in the reservoir in 10 hours =l×b×level of water
=100×50×1=5000 m3
⇒ Volume of water flown in the reservoir in 1 hour =500010=500 m3
Area of the mouth of the square pipe =10×10=100 cm2=0.01 m2
Speed of water per hour =5000.01=50000 m/hr
Hence, speed of the water flowing in the reservoir =50 km/hr
