Question

A rectangular solid block has sides 4×10×20cmand a density of 7.5gcm-3. If it rests on a horizontal flat surface, calculate the minimum and maximum pressure it can exert (in SI units). Also, calculate the thrust in both cases.

Solution

Step 1: Given data

Sides=4×10×20cmDensity(ρ)=7.5gcm-3

Step 2: Calculating the thrust

The thrust will be equal to the weight of the block.

Thrust=Weight=m×g=ρ×V×gVolume(V)=4cm×10cm×20cm=800cm3Thrust=7.5gcm-3×800cm3×9.8ms-2=60073.5gms-2=60073.51000kgms-2=60kgms-2=60N

Step 3: Calculating the maximum pressure

Pressure=ThrustArea

Pressure will be maximum when the block is resting with the face having the minimum area (4cm×10cm) downwards.

Pmax=ThrustAreamin=60N4cm×10cm=60N4100m×10100m=60×100×1004×10=15000Pa

Step 4: Calculating the minimum pressure

Pressure=ThrustArea

Pressure will be minimum when the block is resting with the face having the maximum area (20cm×10cm) downwards.

Pmin=ThrustAreamax=60N20cm×10cm=60N20100m×10100m=60×100×10020×10=3000Pa

Hence,

  1. Thrust = 60N
  2. Maximum pressure = 15000Pa
  3. Minimum pressure = 3000Pa
