Question

A rectangular tank of base area 100 m2 has a height of 2 m. Calculate the thrust at the bottom of the tank, if it is filled upto the brim with water of density 103 kg m3.

Open in App
Solution

Given that,
density of water (ρ)=103 Kg/m3
water fixed up till height (h)=2 m
Area of base (A)=100 m2.
assuming atmospheric pressure (P0)=1 atm105 Pa
so, pressure at bottom of tank,
P=P0+ρgh.
=105+103×10×2[g=10 m/s2]
P=(1.2×105) Pa
Thus, thrust on bottom surface,
F=P.A=(1.2×105)×102F=1.2×107 N
