Question

A reducing agent used for reducing zinc oxide?

Open in App
Solution

In a redox reaction, a reducing agent is when one of the reactants reduces the other reactant by giving out electrons to the reactant. In other words, we can say that when a substance loses electrons to another substance and gets oxidized to a higher valency state is called a reducing agent. Zinc oxide (ZnO) is reduced to zinc by using reducing agents. Coke (C) is used as a reducing agent for this process.

The reaction involved is as follows-

ZnO(s)+C(g)Zn(s)1400°C+CO(g)

Zinc coke zinc carbon

oxide monoxide
