Question

A regular copolymer of ethylene and vinyl chloride contains alternate monomers of each type. What is the mass percentage of ethylene in this co-polymer?

Open in App
Solution

The structure of the co-polymer is
nCH2=CH2+nCH2=CHCl(CH2CH2CH2CHCl)n
Mol. mass of ethylene=28 g
Mol. mass of vinyl chloride=62.5 g
Empirical formula mass of the co-polymer = 28+62.5=90.5 g
So, the mass percentage of ethylene in this co-polymer=
2890.5×100=30.94%
