A reinforced concrete beam, size 250 mm wide and 400 mm deep overall is simply supported over a span of 3m. It is subjected to two point loads P of equal magnitude placed at middle third points. Charactenstic compressive strength,
fck=30N/mm2
Maximum compressive stress in concrete,
σcbc=0.45fck=0.45×30=13.5N/mm2

Section modulus,
Z=bD26=250×(400)26
=6.67×106mm3
Maximum moment that can be carried before development of tension,
Mmax=Zσbt=6.67×106×2.4=16.008kN.m
