Let the number of apples $=x$.

Then, the cost price at the rate of $7$ apples Rs. $4$ $=\frac{4x}{7}.$

The sale price at the rate of $8$ apples Rs. $5=$ $\frac{5x}{8}$

Given that the gain $=$ Rs. $30$.

$\therefore$ The gain $=$ $\frac{5x}{8}-\frac{4x}{7}=30$

$\Rightarrow \frac{3x}{56}=30$

$\Rightarrow x=30\times \frac{56}{3}=560$

So, the number of apples $=560$.
