Question

A ring of radius R is rotated about its axis with angular speed w. Find tension produced in it.

Open in App
Solution

Consider a small element dx of the ring and writing the equilibrium equation,
Mass per unit length of ring=M2πR
Mass of the dx element=dm=dxM2πR
For Equlibrium,
2Tsinθ=dm×v2R
Since,θ=small sinθ=θ,
2Tθ=dx×Mv2(2πR)R2T(dxR)=dx×Mv2(2πR)R
Tension in the ring=T=Mv24πR
