A rocket of mass 3×106 kg takes off from a launching pad and acquires a vertical velocity of 1kms1 and an altitude of 25 km. Calculate its (a) potential energy (b) kinetic energy.

Open in App
Solution

Given;
m=3×106 kg; mass of the rocket
g=9.8 ms2; acceleration due to gravity
h=25 km; height of the rocket from ground
h=25000 m
v=1 kms1; velocity of the rocket
v=1000 ms1

(a) Potential energy of the rocket-
P.E.=mgh
P.E.=3×106×9.8×25000 J
P.E.=735×109 J

(b) Kinetic energy of the rocket-
K.E=12mv2
K.E.=12×3×106×(1000)2J
K.E.=1.5×1012J
