Question

A rod of negligible heat capacity has length 40 cm, area of cross-section 1.0 cm2 and thermal conductivity 100 W/(moC). The temperature of one end is maintained at 0 oC and that of the other end is slowly and linearly varied from 0 oC to 60 oC in 10 minutes. Assuming no loss of heat through the sides, find the total heat transmitted (in J) through the rod in these 10 minutes.

Solution

The correct option is C 450
Temperature as a function of time
T=t10 oC, where t is in seconds.

Using law of thermal conductivity:
dQdt=kAdTdx
Here, dTdx can be approximated to Tl as changes are linear in nature.

Q0dQ=(10×60)0(kAl)×(0.1t)dtQ=[100×1×104×0.1t20.4×2]6000=450 J
