Question

A rolled I-section beam is supported on a 125 mm wide bearing plate as shown in the figure. The relevant properties of the section are: Depth of section, h = 300 mm
Width of flange,
bf=165 mm
Thickness of flange,
tf=11.4 mm
Thickness of Web
tw=7.4 mm
Radius at root R = 16 mm
Assuming material yield strength,
fy=250MPa,
design compressive stress for web.
fcd=111.55MPa,
and partial safety factor for material,
γm0=1.10

As per IS : 800-2007, the web buckling strength (in kN, round off to two decimal places) of the beam is____
  1. 227.004

Solution

The correct option is A 227.004

x=h2=3002=150 mm

Cross-sectional area of web for buckling

Ab=B×tw=(b+x)×tw

=(125+150)×7.4

=2035 mm2

Web buckling strength=Ab×fcd

=2035 mm2×111.55 N/mm2

=227.004 kN
