Question

A salt X, on heating releases CO2 gas .If one molecule of this salt reacts with two molecules of HCl (acid),.calculate the number of metal atoms present in one molecule of X and determine the formula of X.

Solution

  1. Let the metal atom be M.
  2. Since the salt X produces CO2 gas, the salt is a carbonate. (MCO3).
  3. The salt X reacts with 2 molecules of HCl and the salt formed should be MCl2.
  4. Hence valency of the metal atom is 2.
  5. MCO3 (s) + 2HCl (l)lMCl2(aq) + H2O(l) +CO2(g).
  6. Therefore, the number of metal atoms present in one molecule of X is one.
  7. The formula of X is MCO3.
