Question

A sample of air is kept in a container having walls which are slightly conducting. The initial temperature and volume are 27C and 800 cm3 respectively. Find the rise in temperature if the gas is compressed to 200 cm3 (i) in a short time (ii) in a sufficiently long time.
[Take γ=1.4 and 40.4=1.74]

Solution

The correct option is C (i) 222 K (ii) 0 K
When the gas is compressed in a short interval of time, the process can be considered to be abiabatic. Thus, the equation of state in terms of T and V gives:
T2 Vγ12=T1Vγ11
or T2=T1(V1V2)γ1
From the data given in the question,
T2=300×[800200]0.4=522 K
Rise in temperature ΔT=T2T1=222 K

When the gas is compressed in a sufficiently long time, the process can be considered to be isothermal. Thus, the temperature remains constant i.e 27C.
So, rise in temperature ΔT=0 .
Thus, option (c) is the correct answer.
