Question

A sample of gas is allowed to expand adiabatically. As a consequence its volume increases from 1 m3 to 32 m3 and temperature drops from 320 K to 80 K. How many degree of freedom are associated with the molecules of gas.

Solution

For Adiabatic Proces :-
PVγ= constant ... (1)
For an ideal gas,
PV=nRT
P=nRTV
Put value of P in equation (1),
[nRTV]Vγ=C
TVγ1= constant
T1Vγ11=T2Vγ12
[T1T2]=[V2V1]γ1
[32080]=[321]γ1
[2]2=[2]5γ5
On comparing
5γ5=2
γ=75
For Degree of freedom,
γ=1+2f
75=1+2f
25=2f
f=5
Sample-gas is diatomic.
