According to the law of constant proportions, the elements of a chemical compound are always combined together in a fixed proportion.

In a CO2 molecule, the ratio of the mass of oxygen to that of carbon atoms is given below.

Atomic mass of oxygenAtomic mass of carbon= 3212

So, if total mass of CO2 is given to be 36 g, then the mass of oxygen in the sample = 3212×36 = 96 g
