Question

A series L-C-R circuit is connected to a 220 V variable frequency AC supply. If L = 20 mH, C = (800/π2)μF and R = 110 Ω.
(i) Find the frequency of the source for which average power absorbed by the circuit is maximum.
(ii) Calculate the value of maximum current amplitude.

Solution

Maximum power is absorbed at resonant frequency.
Resonant frequency fr=12πLC
Or fr=12π20×103×800×106/π2=125 Hz
At resonance, impedance of the circuit Z=R=110Ω
Rms value of voltage Vrms=220 V
Peak value of voltage Vo=Vrms2=1102 V
So, maximum current amplitude Imax=VoZ=1102110=2 A
