Question

A series LCR circuit is designed to resonate at an angular frequency ω=105rad/s. The circuit draws 16Wpower from 120V source at resonance. The value of resistanceR in the circuit is _______ Ω.

Solution

Step 1. Given data:

Resonant Angular frequency ω=105rad/s

Power (P)=16W

Voltage (V)=120volt

Step 2. Find the value of resistanceR:

At resonance:

XL=XC

Where,

XL=Inductive reactance

XC=Capacitive reactance

Net impedance is given as

Z=R2+XL-XC2(XL=XC)

Where, Z=impedance

R=resistance

XL=inductive reactance

XC=capacitive reactance

Z=R

Now, the power in terms of the voltage and resistance of the circuit is,
P=V2R

16=1202R

R=1440016

R=900Ω

Hence,R is900Ω.
