Authorization is the function of specifying access rights/privileges to resources related to information security and computer security in general and to access control in particular. More formally, "to authorize" is to define an access policy. Both are perfectly correct English spellings. Typically British English speakers prefer 'authorise' and American English speakers prefer 'authorize', but in fact both spellings are correct 'British' usage.
Most computer security systems are based on a two step process: (1) Authentication to ensure that the entity requesting access to the system is what or who it claims to be, and (2) Authorization to allow access only to those resources which are appropriate to that entity's identity.
