Question

A ship equipped with a sonar produces an ultrasonic sound wave. The wave took 2 s to reach the receiver after being reflected by a sunken ship directly below it. If the velocity of waves in sea water is 1450 m/s, find the depth at which sunken ship is located.

Solution

The correct option is B

1450 m

Given, velocity of sound in water V = 1450 m/s

The time interval between the production and reception of the wave t=2.0s

Let, d be the depth at which sunken ship is located.

So, the total distance travelled by the sound wave is 2d

We know, distance=speed×time

2d=Vt

d=Vt2

d=1450×22

d=1450m
