Let selling price without tax be $x$ .
So, $8 %$ of $x = \frac{8}{100} (x) = 0.08 x$
Selling price with tax $= x + 0.08 x = 1.08 x$
According to the question:
$1.08 x = 1242$
$\Rightarrow x = \frac{1242}{1.08}$
$∴ x = 1150$
