Given, the shopkeeper makes a profit of Rs. 46 in a day by selling gel pens.
Also, the profit made by him is 5 less than thrice the number of gel pens sold by him.
Let the number of gel pens sold be p.
Then 5 less than thrice the number of gel pens sold = 3p5
And this is equal to 46.
Hence, equating both, we get the equation as
3p5=46.
