Question

A silver wire has a resistance of 2.1 W at 27.5 °C, and a resistanceof 2.7 W at 100 °C. Determine the temperature coefficient ofresistivity of silver.

Solution

It is given that the resistance of a silver wire at 275°C, R 1 =21Ω, the resistance of a silver wire at 100°C, R 2 =27Ω.

The formula of temperature coefficient is,

α= R 2 R 1 R 1 ( T 2 T 1 )

Substitute the values.

α= 2721 21( 100275 ) α=00039° C 1

Thus, the value of the temperature coefficient of silver is 00039° C 1 .
